(…) All of Firefox Reality is open source. We believe that the future of the web will be heavily intertwined with virtual and augmented reality, and that future will live through browsers. Mozilla’s chief R&D officer Sean White explained in a blog post:

Firefox Reality leverages emerging mixed reality web standards, such as WebVR and WebXR, so that users may live immersive experiences without installing headset-specific, custom-built apps. Mozilla revealed Firefox Reality in April, with the goal to provide manufacturers with an easy way to integrate a full-fledged, open-source, customizable browser into their headsets. Oculus Quest users will now enjoy the privacy features included in the browser, such as Enhanced Tracking Protection. So, what if a brand new standalone headset doesn't have a built-in good browser? Then, Mozilla would be here to save the day!Īnyway, there's plenty of reasons, but in the end, it's all a matter of choice: it's best to have several possibilities, instead of only one (which won't please everyone anyway).Mozilla recently brought Firefox Reality, its popular open-source Virtual Reality (VR) browser, to the Oculus Quest handset. Mozilla doesn't target the Go only: it's for all standalone headsets (if I got that right). It brings good competition, and good competition brings fast improvements from each side to stay competitive.

Some people just don't trust Oculus/Facebook, so they will definitely want to use a 3rd party browser. Or maybe it's great but Mozilla knows they can do better. Maybe the built-in browser is not that efficient. "Why would someone create a new browser when Windows has one built-in?" I was wondering the same thing, and then I read quite a relevant comment on Youtube about that: you can compare this situation to normal browsers on Windows. Why would anyone make a browser app for the Go anyways, when it has its own built-in browser functions?
