I use a device from - essentially a 40Gb portable hard drive but useful for backing up cards or transferring images. Going to be a while before I can spend US$950 on a grip, though. Or go even MORE expensive and get the Canon wireless grip, which includes USB hard drive support so you can shoot straight to the drive. I don't know how you plan to put the files onto the external disk without software in the middle? Otherwise, you need to get a disk that reads your Compact Flash card.
Be sure to get something with a fast transfer rate, otherwise it will take forever to dump your images. There are lots of portable hard drive options out there, the most important feature (in my opinion) is the transfer rate. and would like to avoid taking a bunch of 16GB CF cards I won't be using again.
